Digital Orders Skyrocketed 124% in 2020
QSRmagazine.com says digital ordering was a lifeline for consumers and restaurants, particularly full-service restaurants, during the pandemic, reports The NPD Group. In the year ending March 2021, which covers a full year since the start of the pandemic, restaurant digital orders grew 124 percent compared to prior year.

Digital orders for carry-out, which represented 62 percent of all digital orders, increased by 130 percent, and digital orders for delivery grew by 140 percent in the period compared to year ago and held 38 percent share of total restaurant digital orders, according to NPD’s ongoing foodservice market research, CREST. 
 
TravelCenters of America Rethinks Its Approach to Foodservice
ConvenienceStoreNews.com says nearly a year after welcoming customers back at some of its full-service restaurants, TravelCenters of America Inc. (TA) is taking a closer look at its foodservice offerings and rethinking its approach.

Speaking during the company's first-quarter 2021 earnings call, held May 4, CEO Jonathan Pertchik reported that the Westlake-based travel center operator continues to reopen its full-service restaurants cautiously and carefully, while exploring alternative operating models and other foodservice brands.
 
Alliance Data to Separate Card Services and Loyalty Businesses
Alliance Data Systems announced its intention to spin off its LoyaltyOne segment, comprising its Canadian AIR MILES Reward Program and Netherlands-based BrandLoyalty business. The spinoff is expected to be tax-free, resulting in two independent, U.S.-based, publicly traded companies, Alliance Data and "Spinco," positioned to pursue their respective unique growth opportunities and build long-term value.

Immediately following the transaction, Alliance Data stockholders will own shares of both companies, with Alliance Data retaining a minority stake in Spinco. At the time of the spinoff, Spinco expects to complete a debt financing and dividend the net proceeds to Alliance Data. Alliance Data will use all of the net proceeds to retire a portion of its corporate debt. Alliance Data expects the spinoff to be completed by the end of the year.
 
Phoenix Suns add Another Partnership, Pairing Up with Fanatics
CNBC.com says the Phoenix Suns announced it will partner with sports merchandise company Fanatics. Fanatics will oversee the Suns’ online, mobile and in-venue team shops at Phoenix Suns Arena in what is labeled an “omnichannel retail partnership.”

Fanatics will also control e-commerce operations for the Suns’ sister team, the Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association, and collaborate with team jersey patch partner PayPal for payment options for consumers.
