Publix has announced it has purchased more than 1 million pounds of produce as well as 100,000 gallons of milk for Feeding America local food banks. This program, which began April 22, looks to help farmers and families in need due to the pandemic by purchasing fruit, vegetables, and milk directly from Florida produce farmers and southeastern dairies and donating them to Feeding America food banks.
“We’re proud of the success this initiative has had in supporting farmers and families affected by the pandemic,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones in a press release. “As a food retailer, feeding families is our greatest opportunity to give back, and we are grateful to be able to do so while supporting produce and dairy farmers. During such challenging times, we are even more committed to supporting those in need and doing good, together.”
According to the Publix press release, Feeding America estimates at least 17 million additional people will experience food insecurity due to COVID-19. Also, farmers have had declining demand, which has meant some items have had to be thrown out due to stores and schools closing.
“There are some things you can’t plan for, and this is one of them,” said 5 Brothers Produce Senior Sales Associate Thomas Torbert in the same news release. “You just hope that you can find the right people to work with, people who can come up with the right solutions to help you make it through. We found that right partner in Publix.”
The brand has also made two separate $1 million donations to Feeding America food banks during the pandemic as well. These donations have been made across the southeast of the United States in seven different states in total. These states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia for a total of 32 different food banks donated to.
“I want to thank Publix Super Markets Charities for this generous donation,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones on Publix’s website. “During these unprecedented times that have affected nearly every aspect of our day-to-day lives, many people may not know where their next meal is coming from. This donation will provide assistance to those impacted and help continue the work that Publix, Publix Charities and Feeding America do every day to alleviate hunger in the communities we serve.”
