For the National Hamburger Day on May 28, Burger King released information on each state’s preferences for Whopper customizations. The study — from Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2022 — revealed that Burger King customers love the ability to customize their orders and “have it their way.”

The study was inspired by the 200,000+ unique ways to customize the Whopper, offering extra toppings, sauces, or burger patties. With the number of options, the QSR chain wanted to see how different regions of the U.S. took advantage of the offerings. As part of the study, Burger King broke down which states preferred which customization options and named New Mexico as “The Champ” for ordering the most Whopper sandwiches of all 50 states.

“The distinctive taste and quality of the Whopper comes down to what we’ve been doing differently for nearly 70 years – flame grilling,” said Pat O’Toole, Chief Marketing Officer, Burger King North America. “With more than 200,000 ways to customize the iconic sandwich, we encourage our Guests to have their flame-grilled Whopper just the way they like it – whether that means a creative combination or a straight-up classic. ‘You Rule’ and so does your Whopper order.”

In addition to the study, Burger King is giving Royal Perks loyalty program members a free hamburger with any $1 purchase between May 26 – 28, 2023.
