A Meaningful Rewards Program Launched by the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross recently reported a severe blood shortage, followed by the launch of its new Blood Donor Rewards program. The vital charitable organization providing lifesaving blood, platelets, and plasma seeks to encourage donations while offering thanks in the form of perks.

The points-based program allows rewards participants to earn at least 100 points each time they donate blood, up to six times during a 365-day period. The American Red Cross has developed a formula to help determine the total amount of points earned during an individual’s donation:

Total Points Earned for Each Donation =

Base Points + Procedure Bonus + Blood Type Bonus + Need Based Bonus

(terms and conditions apply)

Procedure Bonuses can include an additional 100 points for Power Red, Platelets, or AB Elite Plasma. Blood types, such as Type O whole blood, might also earn donors additional points.

Program participants who earn enough points can redeem up to 10 e-gift cards from a selection of merchants during the year. Alternatively, they can save up to redeem points for one American Red Cross merchandise item after the organization’s store opens in early 2025. Points do expire, and to redeem them, individuals must have a RedCrossBlood.org account or a Blood Donor App profile.

In a separate initiative, the non-profit organization partnered with the NFL to encourage blood donations, automatically entering those who donate from January 1 – 31, 2024, in a giveaway for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas (terms and conditions apply). The winner will also receive a $1,000 gift card toward expenses.

CiCLO® Technology Threaded through McDonald’s New Sustainable Crew Uniforms

As part of its commitment to sustainability goals, McDonald’s is investing in new uniforms made with CiCLO technology for its team members. Fast-food restaurants typically choose polyester uniforms as they are often more durable and launder well. However, polyester “sheds” plastic microfibers during the fabric’s creation and also when washed. CiCLO technology is used to help synthetic materials — like polyester — biodegrade at rates more in line with natural fibers. The textile ingredient from CiCLO is added alongside traditional polyester and is “activated” when the uniform is exposed to microbes and water. All U.S. McDonald’s restaurants have access to the new fabric for the brand’s classic denim uniforms.

Notably, in the past year, the burger and fries giant has taken steps to strengthen its commitment to environmental concerns, from a solar energy project in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, to improving the McFlurry spoon — using less plastic in its creation. Crewmembers will also be provided with a reusable spindle that can be cleaned after McFurries are made. Both the smaller spoon and the reusable spindle will combat plastic waste.
