The receipt verification queue found at the Sam’s Club exit can often make customers wait, and the retailer has set out to provide a better experience for its customers. The brand plans to implement a new technology incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision to end the need for lines. This additional technology will build on those currently in use by Sam’s Club, such as Scan & Go™ — a feature that enables members to use the store’s mobile app, scanning items and skipping the club’s traditional checkout. At present, Sam’s Club is piloting the new technology at 10 locations.
“This is Sam’s Club at its very best, listening to feedback from members, putting their needs at the center of everything we do — and then applying digital innovations to deliver an industry-leading member experience. We are constantly looking at ways for Sam’s Club to be the most convenient membership club and will continue to prioritize using technology to provide a truly differentiated and delightful experience for our members,” says Chris Nicholas, CEO of Sam’s Club.
When a member finishes checking out at a store register or through Scan & GoTM, they will be able to leave the club without needing a store associate to check their receipt. The technology at the exit will scan all the items in their cart and verify payment has been made. Not only will this create an improved customer experience, but it also frees up Sam’s Club greeters for other tasks.
Sam’s Club reports early success with the new technology and plans to expand its use to the rest of its locations — nearly 600 — by the end of 2024.
