Research Shows Shoppers Want Combined Human/AI Interaction
A study by Intellias revealed key insights about shopping preferences regarding AI chatbots. Researchers polled 1,000 consumers in the United States, and findings indicate 71% of consumers felt that a blended approach of AI applications and human interactions is necessary in the retail industry. Another 66% of consumers said that it doesn’t matter to them if AI is utilized for automating repetitive tasks, but they don’t want the technology to replace human interaction.
Meanwhile, 44% acknowledged that AI helped brands and retailers create more tailored shopping experiences, and 20% stated that chatbot interactions were more likely to cause them to abandon their shopping carts. At the same time, 46% of shoppers said they didn’t mind AI technology in their buying journey if it was seamless and not cumbersome.
“There’s little doubt that AI — and in particular Gen AI — has had its watershed moment, as the intersection between rapid consumer and business adoption really came to the fore last year. While there’s no denying the hype curve, AI mustn’t become a go-to catchall for plugging gaps in shopping experiences,” said Alexander Goncharuk, Vice President of Global Retail at Intellias.

Starbucks Discontinuing Odyssey Beta Program
Starbucks announced that it is shuttering its Odyssey Beta program by the end of the month. The initiative allowed customers to collect and trade unique digital stamps via nonfungible tokens (NFTs). The beta program, the Odyssey marketplace, and the program’s Discord server will all come to an end on March 31, 2024. The company only cited “preparing for what comes next” and didn’t give a specific reason for the discontinuation but hinted at evolving the program. Users can still sell, trade, and buy stamps on the Nifty Gateway marketplace.
The Seattle, Washington-based coffeehouse chain noted on its website: “We are excited for you to see what comes next and are grateful for your consistent engagement and feedback. We are thankful to have had this opportunity to test into these different ways of driving community and loyalty at Starbucks, and we look forward to bringing these learnings to a broader audience.”
Starbucks originally launched the Odyssey Program in 2022 when blockchain technology was in a downturn. Other major U.S. companies, including Meta and GameStop, have made similar decisions to end their NFT activities.
