Pay with Points at the Pump: Partnership Benefits uChoose Rewards® Members

Customers with debit and credit cards issued by financial institutions participating in Fiserv, Inc.’s uChoose Rewards® program can use reward balances toward fuel purchases at 7,000 bp and Amoco locations. Almost four million consumers will benefit from the new “pay with points” initiative developed through a partnership between loyalty network platform provider Engage People and Velocity Logic, a provider of loyalty program software for convenience stores. Program members can save up to 50 cents per gallon (restrictions apply). uChoose Rewards’ integration with the Engage People platform allows for a frictionless transaction experience at the pump.

“Consumers value convenience, and enabling rewards program members to pay with points directly at the point of sale enhances their overall experience,” says Jonathan Silver, CEO of Engage People.

“Today’s consumer expects to be rewarded for loyalty, and they appreciate the ability to redeem rewards in a variety of ways at places they already visit. Fuel is a regular purchase for the majority of households, and diversifying uChoose Rewards to enable redemption of points at the pump allows financial institutions to broaden the appeal of their card rewards programs,” adds Rajeev Yerukalapudi, Vice President of Product Management at Fiserv.

Fiserv’s Expectations and Experiences research indicates that 69% of consumers using credit and debit cards choose the card offering the most in rewards when making a purchase.

Applebee’s Subscription Pass Helps Out on Date Night

In mid-January, casual restaurant chain Applebee’s offered a year-long “date night” pass, effective February 1, 2024 – January 31, 2025, for couples watching their budgets. For $200, Applebee’s customers were given an opportunity to purchase a “Date Night Pass” that would allow them to experience 52 weeks of dates at the restaurant. At each weekly visit, diners with passes could expect up to $30 off their food and non-alcoholic drink purchases.

The new initiative became a hot topic on social media, with one TikTokker reporting the subscription deal could end up costing a couple a mere $3.85 per week for the year ($220/52 weeks) — not counting server tip — if they adhered to a $30 budget when dining at Applebee’s. Online orders for takeout can be purchased with the pass if orders are made through the brand’s website or app (vs. a third-party delivery platform).

Not all Applebee’s locations are participating in the initiative. A limited number of passes were made available beginning on January 22, 2024, and the brand has since reported that the “Date Night Pass” sold out. Those still interested in the subscription can join Club Applebee’s to learn about future updates.
