Mastercard SpendingPulse: Strong Consumer Spending Drives U.S. Retail Sales Growth
2021 kicked off with retail gains across nearly all sectors and all 50 U.S. states, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which measures in-store and online retail sales across all forms of payment.

This January, U.S. retail sales excluding automotive and gasoline increased 9.2% year-over-year, with online sales growing 62.1% compared to 2020. The momentum of a stronger-than-anticipated holiday season continued throughout the month, with consumer spending buoyed by an infusion of stimulus payments, particularly in the first two weeks of the year.
American Airlines to Furlough up to 13,000 Employees
American Airlines will send WARN/furlough notices to roughly 13,000 employees as federal aid is set to expire next month, the company announced Wednesday.

This includes 1,850 pilots, 4,245 flight attendants, 1,420 maintenance workers, 3,145 fleet service workers, 1,205 passenger service workers, 100 dispatch workers and 40 flight crew training instructors and simulator pilot instructors.
Trader Joe's Hikes Hazard Pay for its U.S. Workers, But There's A Catch
A Seattle law requiring large grocery stores to pay their frontline workers an extra four bucks an hour takes effect as of Wednesday, and Trader Joe's, for one, is opting to extend the additional cash beyond the city to pay its workers more nationwide. But the temporary wage bump comes with a catch: The supermarket chain is also canceling midyear raises for its roughly 10,000 employees.

Trader Joe's on Tuesday said it would temporarily raise hazard pay for all of its hourly workers across the U.S., bringing the company's hazard pay to $4 an hour, in line with a mandate passed last week by the Seattle City Council. It operates more than 500 stores nationwide.
